The Zulu monarchy has always been a pillar of tradition, culture, and pride for the Zulu nation, and its current leader, Isilo uMisuzulu kaZwelithini, embodies both the strength and challenges of this esteemed legacy.
Born to King Goodwill Zwelithini and Queen Mantfombi Dlamini, a Swati princess of royal lineage, Isilo’s path to the throne was one marked by both destiny and contention. His mother’s royal blood further cemented his qualification to ascend to the throne, but the journey was anything but smooth.
When King Goodwill Zwelithini passed on, the royal household faced a widely publicized and hotly contested succession battle. His brother, Prince Simakade, argued that, as the firstborn son, he had a rightful claim to the throne. The matter escalated to the courts, where a decision was ultimately made in favor of Isilo. His coronation, a spectacle of Zulu pride and cultural celebration, was an event to remember.
The beauty of the ceremony was unmatched, and as someone born from the Xhosa tribe but raised in a Zulu community in Soweto, I felt an immense sense of connection and pride in witnessing it.
Despite his coronation being a unifying moment, the challenges facing Isilo’s reign began to unfold shortly after. From widely publicized personal controversies to political decisions that sparked debates, the King has had to navigate turbulent waters. One of the most significant moments was the scandal involving anti-GBV activist Sihle Sibisi. While the matter caused a public outcry, the King managed to move past it and refocus on his responsibilities.
Later, he married a Swati princess, who reportedly served as the CEO of a major bank in Eswatini. This union, deeply rooted in royal alliances, seemed promising, but soon rumors arose about his involvement with another woman, one who had three children prior to their relationship. This choice drew criticism from some Zulu community members, who felt it clashed with traditional expectations. Social media started reffer to him as "The stepfather" I am not sure what is wrong with that, but content creators seem to find this funny. Who cares anyway? If his happy, singenaphi thina?
Now, news has surfaced that Isilo is initiating a divorce from his first wife while reportedly preparing for another marriage early this year. This revelation is both surprising and troubling. The first wife holds a special place in Zulu culture, often seen as the foundation of the royal household.
The timing and reasons for this divorce remain unclear, but the implications for the monarchy and its perception are profound. Such decisions are bound to intensify public scrutiny and invite further commentary on his leadership.

Adding to this, Isilo recently made headlines by reportedly dismissing key figures in the Zulu monarchy, including the Prime Minister of the Zulu nation and someone within the Ingonyama Trust. These bold moves have sparked both support and criticism.
While some view them as necessary steps toward modernizing the monarchy, others see them as destabilizing. The Ingonyama Trust, in particular, plays a critical role in managing land owned by the Zulu people, and any changes in its leadership can have far-reaching consequences.
As a traditional girl deeply rooted in customs and beliefs, I can’t help but wonder: where are the King’s advisors in all of this? Leadership, especially one as sacred as the Zulu monarchy, requires a steady hand and wise counsel. During the reign of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the monarchy had the benefit of a seasoned statesman who provided guidance, stability, and protection. With his passing, it seems the monarchy is struggling to find similar leadership within its inner circle.
The King’s youth and modern outlook are part of what makes him relatable and admired by many. His stance on societal issues like gender-based violence, poverty, and the preservation of traditions is commendable. However, his personal life and decisions have become a focal point for critics, overshadowing his efforts to uplift the Zulu nation. While he is entitled to live his life, the reality is that his actions carry weight not just for himself but for the entire kingdom.
I worry about the external and internal forces that may be working against Isilo. The monarchy has always been a target for those seeking power or influence, and the King must be vigilant against such threats, including those that may come in traditional or spiritual forms.
Strengthening his connection to God and his ancestors could provide him with the guidance and protection he needs during these trying times.
Ultimately, Isilo uMisuzulu kaZwelithini has the potential to lead the Zulu nation into a new era of prosperity and cultural pride. But to do so, he needs a team of advisors who prioritize his well-being and the stability of the monarchy above all else.
It is my hope that he finds such guidance and that his reign becomes a source of unity and inspiration for all who look to the Zulu monarchy as a symbol of heritage and resilience.
Makukhaye Ebukhosi bakwa-Zulu. May his Majesty find guidance to lead his people with wisdom and integrity.
